La Rioja's provincial bonds — locally termed "Patacones" or more precisely "BOCADE" notes — were among the more obscure emergency quasi-currencies circulated during Argentina's catastrophic 2001–2002 financial collapse, when provinces were cut off from federal transfers and began issuing their own paper to pay salaries and obligations. La Rioja was one of the smallest and most fiscally dependent provinces in the country, which makes its independent emission less an act of monetary confidence than a survival measure.
By 2003, most provincial currencies were being phased out under federal pressure and exchange programs. A note dated that year sits right at the tail end of the experiment.
