The 50 Pesos Uruguayos denomination was introduced as part of a redenomination series following Uruguay's long struggle with inflation — the country had shed three zeros from the old peso in 1993, making notes like this one effectively worth 50,000 of the previous unit. Thomas De La Rue handled the contract, as they had for much of Uruguay's modern note production.
The cotton substrate and single watermark security package reflect the modest budget allocated to mid-range denominations in this series. Higher values received more elaborate protection; the 50 was considered low enough risk to keep simple.
