50 Pfennig Spandau

Spandau issued this note in 1917 under its own municipal authority — a common wartime arrangement as the Reichsbank's metal coinage disappeared into the war economy and local governments scrambled to fill the small-denomination void. Carl Flemming A.G., operating out of Glogau and Berlin, was a commercial printer with a long publishing history rather than a specialist security printer, which is typical of Notgeld production at this stage of the war.

Spandau remained an independent city until its incorporation into Greater Berlin in 1920, which gives this note a brief but genuine municipal identity.
