South Sudan gained independence in July 2011 following decades of civil war, making its coinage among the newest national series in the world. The 2015-dated coins were issued as the country was sliding back into conflict — a civil war that erupted in December 2013 had already displaced nearly two million people by the time these entered circulation.
Actual circulation was minimal.
