The Bank of Sudan's early 1980s issues occupied an awkward transitional moment — the country was still operating with a relatively stable pound before the debt spiral and inflation of the mid-decade accelerated the series' obsolescence. Thomas De La Rue handled the printing throughout this period, a relationship dating back to Sudan's pre-independence note issues under the Sudan Currency Board.
P#17 carried a watermark security feature at a time when counterfeiting pressure on Sudanese currency was not yet acute — the more serious problems came later, particularly after 1985.
