Sudan's 1984 issue came at a moment of acute financial strain — the country was carrying one of the heaviest per-capita debt loads in Africa, and the IMF had effectively suspended its lending program the previous year. The 50 Pounds was the highest denomination in the series at the time, which matters: high-value notes in economies under that kind of pressure tend to circulate hard and return to banks in poor condition.
De La Rue's production for Sudan through this period was competent but not elaborate. The watermark remains the primary security feature — a relatively modest specification for a 50-unit ceiling note by mid-1980s standards.
