The SU-85 was developed in 1943 as a direct response to the appearance of German Tiger tanks on the Eastern Front, the existing SU-76 being wholly inadequate against that armor. Production ran through 1944, when the SU-100 rendered it obsolete almost immediately. This coin belongs to the Soviet commemorative program honoring Second World War weaponry — a series that reflected late-Soviet political investment in the mythology of the Great Patriotic War rather than any particular minting occasion.
