Issued as part of Israel's first gold coin program, this 1962 piece was produced for export and gift markets rather than domestic circulation — Israeli law at the time prohibited private gold ownership within the country. The coins were sold primarily through foreign outlets and the state tourism apparatus, making them effectively a hard-currency revenue instrument for a young government with acute foreign exchange needs.
