Tanzania's 1974 conservation series was part of a coordinated FAO and WWF-backed push across developing nations to issue high-value silver pieces explicitly funding wildlife preservation programs. The Bank of Tanzania used the proceeds to support what would eventually become the legal framework behind the Selous Game Reserve's expanded protections — at the time, one of the largest fauna reserves in the world.

The .925 silver specification was dictated by international collector market expectations, not domestic monetary need. These never circulated.
