50 Soles de Oro

The American Bank Note Company held the Peruvian contract through much of the mid-twentieth century, and this 1965 issue falls within a long unbroken run of ABNC-printed Soles de Oro notes for the Banco Central de Reserva. By the mid-1960s, Peru was managing steady inflationary pressure tied to balance-of-payments deficits and heavy public spending under Belaúnde Terry's first administration — the 50 Soles denomination was a practical workhorse note in that environment.

P#89 belongs to a series that would be superseded relatively quickly as inflation accelerated toward the end of the decade, pushing higher denominations into everyday use and relegating 50 Soles to marginal purchasing power by the early 1970s.
