Tajikistan declared independence on September 9, 1991, following the failed coup attempt against Gorbachev in Moscow just days earlier. The somoni itself was only introduced in 2000, named after Ismoil Somoni, the 9th-century Samanid ruler claimed as a national founding figure — a deliberate act of cultural distancing from the Soviet ruble system that had collapsed along with the union.
The 2021 issue marks the 30th anniversary of that declaration, produced during a period when Tajikistan's commemorative program has leaned heavily on .925 silver pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
