Comments

The Banco Central del Ecuador relied on the American Bank Note Company for much of its mid-century production, and this 50 Sucres issue falls squarely within that long relationship. ABNC's intaglio printing gave Ecuadorian notes of this period their characteristic tactile quality — something that distinguished them from the flat lithographic work coming out of cheaper alternatives at the time.

The eight-year span covering this issue, 1968 to 1976, brackets a period of significant economic shift for Ecuador: commercial oil exports began in 1972, transforming government revenues and fueling inflation that would eventually push the 50 Sucres denomination toward obsolescence within two decades.
