Guinea's Sylis replaced the Guinean Franc in 1972 — which makes this 1971-dated note a pre-release issue, printed before the currency formally existed in public circulation. The Sylis was introduced as part of Sékou Touré's broader economic nationalism program, severing Guinea's last substantive monetary ties to the CFA franc zone it had already abandoned in 1960 when it became the first French African territory to vote against de Gaulle's proposed community.
The series was printed by the Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Noire — a detail worth noting given Guinea's ideological distance from French institutions at the time.
