Kandel is a small town in the southern Palatinate, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it issued its own emergency currency as Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be printed. The 500,000 Mark denomination places this note in the late hyperinflationary spiral — by mid-1923, that figure bought approximately what a few Pfennig had purchased two years earlier.
Just & Söhne G.m.b.H. was a regional printer that handled Notgeld commissions for several Palatinate issuers during this period. Not a prestige house, but reliable for volume work under chaotic conditions.
