J.A. Moisan on rue Saint-Jean in Quebec City claims to be the oldest grocery store in North America, operating continuously since 1871. This 500-cent note is a contemporary promotional scrip — issued in 2011 as a gift certificate or loyalty instrument, not legal tender in any sense. Printed by J.B. Deschamps Inc., a Quebec commercial printer, the design deliberately mimics historical banknote conventions to reinforce the store's antiquarian brand identity.
Collectible primarily as ephemera. Redeemed examples turn up more often than unredeemed ones.
