Bosnia and Herzegovina issued this coin in 1993 while the country was actively under siege — Sarajevo itself was enduring what would become the longest capital city siege in modern warfare. The timing of an Olympic commemorative struck during that period is historically jarring: the 1984 Winter Games had been held in Sarajevo, and the infrastructure built for them was by 1993 largely rubble or occupied by military forces.
The newly independent state had gained international recognition in April 1992, and early coinage issues served partly to assert that recognition on the world stage.
