Suriname's 500 Dollar note from 2024 is a relatively high denomination for a country whose currency has been in chronic trouble — the Surinamese dollar replaced the guilder in 2004 at a rate of 1,000 to 1, itself a symptom of hyperinflationary collapse in the late 1990s. The 2024 issue reflects an ongoing revaluation effort after a further crisis in 2020–2021, when the dollar lost roughly half its value against the US dollar within months following fiscal collapse tied to the Bouterse-era debt accumulation.
G+D's Leipzig plant handles the printing — the same facility that has supplied numerous Caribbean and South American central banks for decades.
