Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed naturalistic depiction of the African pied hornbill (Lophoceros fasciatus) perched amid dense tropical foliage occupies the entire hexagonal field. The bird is shown in left profile, with its distinctive large curved beak and pied plumage rendered in sharp relief against a mirror-polished background. Large tropical leaves fill the surrounding field, creating a rich, layered composition. The denomination «500 fr.» is inscribed in bold raised numerals to the right of the bird.

Aanvullende informatie

The Bakassi Peninsula dispute between Cameroon and Nigeria ran for decades before the International Court of Justice ruled in Cameroon's favor in 2002, with Nigeria completing its withdrawal only in 2008 after prolonged negotiation. This coin commemorates that territorial resolution — one of the few modern African border disputes settled entirely through international legal process rather than armed conflict.

Silver-plated copper-nickel at this weight is the standard substrate for Cameroonian commemorative issues produced for the collector market, most of which never approach the country whose name they bear.
