| Obverse description | Large forward-facing effigy of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten (Echnaton), depicted wearing the traditional striped nemes headdress adorned with a uraeus cobra at the crown. An ankh symbol appears to the right of the portrait in the field. The legend REPUBLIQUE DE GUINEE curves along the upper periphery, while the name ECHNATON is inscribed in the lower field beneath the portrait. The design is rendered in a stylized bas-relief evoking ancient Egyptian artistic convention, set against a smooth mirrored field within a beaded border. |

Guinea's 1970 commemorative series was issued under Sékou Touré's government, which had broken from the French franc zone in 1960 by introducing the Guinean franc — a move that cost Guinea immediate economic isolation after France withdrew all technical and financial support overnight. The silver issues of 1970 were largely aimed at foreign collectors rather than domestic circulation, a common revenue strategy for newly independent African states with limited hard currency reserves.
The choice of Akhenaten as a subject for a West African nation is an ideological one: Touré's pan-African cultural politics frequently reached toward ancient Egypt as a unifying symbol of pre-colonial African civilization.
