Keymir Kor was an 18th-century Turkmen folk hero and poet whose resistance against Persian Qajar incursions made him a recurring figure in the national mythology that independent Turkmenistan worked aggressively to codify after 1991. This coin was issued under Saparmurat Niyazov — Turkmenbashi — whose government systematically elevated such figures into an official pantheon of Turkmen identity, culminating in the Ruhnama, the state spiritual guide published that same year.
The 2001 date places this squarely within Niyazov's most intensely nationalistic phase of commemorative coin policy.
