| 裏面の説明 | Half-length figure of the Sokkuram Bodhisattva rendered in low relief after the celebrated 8th-century granite relief sculpture from the Sokkuram Grotto near Gyeongju, South Korea. The figure is depicted facing slightly left, adorned with an elaborate headdress, flowing robes, and ornate jewelled necklaces, holding a small cup or vessel in the raised right hand. The figure is set within a plain circular inner field, evoking the halo of the original stone relief. The circumferential legend 'REPUBLIC OF KOREA' arcs across the upper border and '- SOKKURAM BODHISATTVA -' along the lower border, both in raised Latin capitals on a polished field. |

Issued as part of South Korea's first commemorative coin program, this piece was authorized amid a broader government push to assert cultural identity through official channels — the Sokkuram grotto, a UNESCO-recognized eighth-century Buddhist shrine near Gyeongju, had been undergoing a controversial Japanese-led restoration since the colonial period, and the newly independent Korean state was actively reclaiming its symbolic ownership of the site. Mintage was low and distribution largely limited to presentation sets, which explains the frequency of surviving specimens in original packaging.
