Opmerkingen

Japan issued 500 Yen banknotes in several distinct series, so without a Pick number or date this entry covers the type in general terms. The 500 Yen denomination was eventually replaced by a coin in 1982 — the note had become impractical as inflation eroded its value to roughly the purchasing power of a bus fare. The Bank of Japan officially demonetized the 500 Yen note on April 1, 1994, leaving a twelve-year window during which both note and coin circulated simultaneously.
