Madagascar's dual-denomination system — ariary alongside the retained franc figure — reflects the incomplete nature of the 2003 redenomination, which officially replaced the Malagasy franc at a rate of 5 to 1 but left the franc value printed on notes for years afterward to ease public confusion. The 25000 franc equivalent placed this note near the top of the series, used predominantly for large domestic transactions in a country where banking penetration remained extremely limited throughout the issue period.
