The Bank of Greece was only four years old when this note was issued — established in 1928 as part of the League of Nations stabilization program that finally pegged the drachma after years of inflationary turbulence following the catastrophic 1922 defeat in Anatolia and the population exchange that followed. The 5000 Drachmai denomination reflects the scale of monetary damage that stabilization was trying to paper over.
ABNC's involvement came through the Greek government's deliberate preference for foreign-printed security paper, considered more resistant to local forgery networks. The intaglio work is characteristic of ABNC's output from this period.
