Beschrijving voorzijde The Gabonese national arms occupy the central field, featuring a shield supported by two black panthers rampant, surmounted by an okoume tree and flanked by the national motto. The commemorative legend arcing around the upper periphery reads 'VISITE OFFICIELLE DU PRESIDENT DE LA REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE AU GABON', with the flanking words 'UNION', 'JUSTICE', and 'TRAVAIL' integrated alongside the supporters. The date '11 FEVRIER 1971' appears below the shield, and the denomination 'FRANCS 5000 FRANCS' is prominently inscribed in the lower field. A serial number is visible in the lower right exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

Gabon issued this piece as part of a wave of commemorative gold struck by newly independent Francophone African states in the late 1960s and early 1970s, many of them produced at the Paris Mint under arrangements that had more to do with diplomatic currency than numismatic demand. Pompidou had visited Gabon in 1971 as part of France's ongoing effort to maintain influence across its former equatorial territories — ties that President Bongo actively cultivated.

Mintages for this series were small and largely absorbed by presentation sets rather than circulation.
