Burundi's 5000-franc wildlife series from this period was produced for the collector market by overseas minting contractors — Burundi itself has no domestic mint. The country's actual monetary system runs on the Burundian franc at denominations nowhere near 5000, making these pieces legal tender in name only, issued specifically to generate foreign exchange revenue through coin dealers and the novelty collector trade.
