Burundi's lionfish issue belongs to a wave of sub-Saharan novelty coinage produced in the early 2010s almost entirely for the collector export market — Burundi itself has no lionfish in its waters, being a landlocked country. These pieces were struck by private minting contractors in Europe, with the issuing authority essentially licensing its name to series designed, produced, and sold with no meaningful domestic circulation intended.
