The Guaraní was introduced in 1944, replacing the Peso at a rate of 100 to 1 following decades of post-war economic instability that had badly eroded public confidence in Paraguayan currency. By the mid-1990s, inflation had pushed denominations into the thousands, and the 5000 Guaranies note entered circulation as an everyday working denomination rather than a high-value reserve piece — meaning worn examples are the rule, not the exception.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is unsurprising; the firm printed the bulk of Paraguay's note series through this period. The watermark remains the sole listed security feature, modest even by regional standards of the time.
