Turkmenistan's mid-1990s manat series was introduced after independence from the Soviet Union, with the 5000 manat representing the upper end of the early denomination range before hyperinflationary pressure necessitated the 2009 redenomination — at which point one new manat was exchanged at 5000 old ones, making this note precisely the unit of that conversion.
Printed by De La Rue, the series relied on relatively modest security — a single watermark — which was already behind contemporary regional standards when issued.
