| Opmerkingen |
Tanzania's 5000 Shilingi was the highest denomination in circulation when this series launched, reflecting the accumulated inflation that had hollowed out the shilling through the structural adjustment years of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The IMF-backed reforms that followed Julius Nyerere's departure from power in 1985 stabilized the economy but not before the currency had lost enormous purchasing power — a 5000-shilling note would have been unthinkable during the ujamaa period.
Giesecke & Devrient have printed Tanzanian banknotes across multiple series; the Leipzig facility has handled security print work for numerous African central banks since decolonization.
