Birendra's coronation in February 1975 was a spectacle of deliberate anachronism — the ceremony drew on Vedic rituals largely unchanged since the Shah dynasty's founding in the 18th century, and the international press coverage was extensive enough that Nepal issued commemorative coins in multiple denominations and metals. The 5g Asarphi was among the finer-metal issues produced for collectors and presentation purposes rather than circulation.
The .999 fineness distinguishes this from Nepal's earlier gold issues, which typically ran at lower purities reflecting bullion practices inherited from the Rana period.
