The short-beaked echidna has appeared on Australian currency for decades — most famously on the 5-cent coin — but its elevation to the five-dollar note is part of a broader redesign program that removed the Queen's portrait from the series following the transition to a republic-ready coinage and note framework. Australia's five-dollar note had carried Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse since decimal introduction in 1966; her death in September 2022 accelerated decisions that were already in motion.
