The circular legend surrounding the portrait reads J.P. BOYER PRESIDENT, with AN 15 appearing at the base of the design, denoting Year 15 of the Haitian Republic in the French Revolutionary calendar system. Haiti's Western Republic coinage of 1818 emerged from the politically fractured island still divided between Alexandre Pétion's republic in the south and Henri Christophe's kingdom in the north. Pétion had died the previous year, leaving Jean-Pierre Boyer to consolidate power — and this small silver issue reflects the new administration's effort to assert monetary legitimacy before Boyer's 1820 reunification of the island.
KM#17 is scarce in any grade. The 6-centime denomination was struck in limited quantities and saw hard use in a poor, post-revolutionary economy.
