Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing portrait of President Kenneth Kaunda occupying the central field, rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail by engraver James Woodford. The legend ZAMBIA arcs along the upper periphery in bold incuse Latin capitals, while the date 1966 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait. The overall design is uncluttered, with the president's effigy dominating the coin's face in a strong, modernist style characteristic of newly independent African nations.

Reverse description A bold, naturalistic depiction of a Bauhinia flower (Zambia's national flower) in full bloom occupies the centre of the field, with sweeping petals and sinuous tendrils extending dynamically toward the rim, engraved by Norman Sillman. The denomination SIX PENCE is inscribed along the lower portion of the field, flanked on either side of the numeral 6D, with the letter D serving as the pence abbreviation positioned centrally between the two words. The floral motif is rendered with strong sculptural relief, emphasising the organic curves of the blossom against the smooth coin field.
