The 1937 Fiji sixpence was part of the inaugural coinage issued under George VI following his accession after Edward VIII's abdication — meaning Fiji's first coinage bearing the new king's effigy appeared within the same year as the constitutional crisis that necessitated it. The Royal Mint moved quickly to update colonial issues across the Empire. Fiji's small-denomination silver coins from this period saw genuine circulation across the islands, where British-administered commerce depended on fractional coinage for everyday transactions in an economy still heavily tied to the sugar trade.
