| Obverse description | Central device depicts a crudely rendered willow tree with drooping, feathery branches rising from a mound, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend MASATHVSETS.IN runs around the circumference in large, irregularly spaced Latin letters, characteristic of the primitive hammered coinage of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The overall flan is irregular in shape, a typical hallmark of the hand-struck production technique employed at the Boston mint. The field is flat and unadorned, with the design elements showing the bold but artistically rudimentary style associated with early American colonial coinage. |
