| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design consists of the Cross of the Order of Christ, rendered as a broad Latin cross with slightly splayed arms, each quadrant containing a trefoil (clover-leaf) ornament in relief, recalling the Avis cross tradition of Portuguese coinage. Small trefoil or cross ornaments are also placed between the arms of the cross. The peripheral legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — encircles the design in Latin capitals, with small cross stops separating the words. The overall composition is geometric and heraldic in character, consistent with Portuguese colonial silver coinage of the late 18th century. The reeded edge is visible at the coin's periphery. |
