La Rioja's gold coinage of the 1840s reflects the fractured monetary reality of the Río de la Plata region, where provincial governments struck their own issues independently of Buenos Aires for decades after independence. The national consolidation that would eventually standardize Argentine coinage was still years away, leaving provinces like La Rioja functioning as autonomous monetary authorities.
KM#19 is among the scarcer provincial Argentine gold types. Survivors in collectible condition are infrequently encountered, most having left the region through trade circuits that funneled specie toward Buenos Aires and Valparaíso.
