The original 8 escudos of this type were struck at the Santiago mint during Chile's early republican period, when the young nation was still stabilizing its monetary institutions following independence from Spain. The 1837 date places it within the administration of Joaquín Prieto, a period of relative fiscal consolidation after years of post-independence turbulence. This piece is an officially issued replica by the Casa de Moneda de Chile — the same institution that struck the originals — produced for the collector market rather than circulation.
