Popayán's 1813 copper emergency issues emerged from the chaos of New Granada's independence struggle, when royalist and patriot forces repeatedly disrupted the region's silver supply and normal mint operations. The city's famous silver mint — one of the oldest in South America, operating since 1729 — could not function as intended, forcing provisional copper coinage to fill the void.
KM#B3 is among the more elusive of the Popayán emergency types.
