Norges midlertidige Rigsbank — the "temporary state bank" — was established in 1814 as Norway asserted independence following the Napoleonic Wars and the dissolution of the union with Denmark. It was always intended as a stopgap institution, and this 8 Rigsbankskilling reflects that transitional moment precisely: an odd denomination issued by a bank that knew it would not last, denominated in a currency unit borrowed from the Danish system it was simultaneously trying to break from.

The embossed stamp served as the primary security measure — straightforward to apply locally without sophisticated printing infrastructure, which mattered in Christiania at the time. The bank was superseded by Norges Bank in 1816.
