Bolivia's Potosí mint had been striking silver coinage almost continuously since 1574, but by the 1850s the facility was caught between an exhausted local silver supply and the political instability following independence. The 8 Soles series of this period emerged from a monetary environment in which the government was actively debasing coinage for fiscal relief — the .903 fineness here already reflects a step down from earlier republican standards.
Potosí pieces from these years are frequently encountered with pronounced die clashing and uneven planchet preparation, a known production problem tied to deteriorating equipment at the mint rather than any individual striking failure.
