Chersonesos was one of the smaller poleis of western Crete, clustered near modern Hersonissos on the northern coast, and its autonomous bronze coinage spans the Hellenistic period almost in its entirety — ending abruptly when Rome reorganized the island as the province of Creta et Cyrene in 67 BC following Metellus's campaign against Cretan piracy. The catalogue references here, particularly SNG Delepierre 5141, place this piece within a well-documented but sparsely studied series whose die links have never been fully worked out.
