Saguntum's coinage survived an extraordinary interruption: Hannibal's eight-month siege and sack of the city in 219 BC — the very episode that triggered Rome's declaration of war against Carthage — left the settlement in ruins. The city was eventually rebuilt under Roman patronage, and this later bronze issue belongs to that reconstructed Saguntum, produced well into the period of Roman provincial administration in Hispania Citerior. Production likely ceased around the time of Sertorius's war against Rome, when the region's minting activity was broadly disrupted.
