Tahmasp I consolidated Safavid religious authority aggressively after inheriting power from his father Ismail I in 1524, and gold ashrafis from his long reign — he ruled until 1576 — reflect the dynasty's insistence on Twelver Shia formulae on official coinage. Qumm, one of the most sacred cities in Shia Islam, operated as both a pilgrimage center and a legitimate mint; its issues carried particular ideological weight beyond their bullion value.
