Additional information

The Fraumünster in Zürich held minting rights granted by Louis the German in 853, making it one of the earlier ecclesiastical minting authorities in the region. By the eleventh century, abbesses exercised direct control over coinage production — a genuine exercise of secular jurisdiction, not merely a ceremonial privilege. The abbey's monetary authority was eventually curtailed as Zürich's civic institutions consolidated power through the thirteenth century.
