Alfonso IX's deniers were struck during a reign defined by almost constant warfare — against Castile, against Portugal, and intermittently against his own excommunication by Pope Celestine III, who objected to Alfonso's marriage to Teresa of Portugal on grounds of consanguinity. The Church's ban briefly disrupted institutional life across León but appears to have had no effect on mint output.
AB#121 is among the more frequently encountered types of Leonese billon coinage, though the low silver content makes surviving pieces vulnerable to heavy corrosion that can obscure die detail entirely.
