| Obverse description | Inscription arranged in four horizontal lines across the field in a monogram-like fashion, composed of the letters forming the legend S NIVIELLA PRVDENS, invoking Saint Nivelles the Prudent as patronal authority of the issuing abbey. The lettering is deeply struck in a bold, somewhat crude Romanesque style typical of mid-11th-century Low Countries ecclesiastical coinage. The irregular flan exhibits the characteristic uneven edges of hand-hammered medieval deniers. No figural motif is present; the entire design relies on the arrangement of capital letters filling the coin's surface. |
