Hermann I von Buxhoeveden was appointed the first Bishop of Dorpat in 1224, following the Livonian Crusade's consolidation of the eastern Baltic under the sword brethren and German ecclesiastical authority. This bracteate — struck from a single die through a thin silver blank, producing a mirrored ghost impression on the reverse — represents the bishop's exercise of independent mint rights, a privilege granted alongside his territorial authority over the newly subjugated Estonian and Latvian populations. At 0.13 g, these pieces circulated in a frontier economy still integrating Germanic monetary practice with a region that had no prior coinage tradition of its own.
