Ladislaus I ruled Hungary during a period of intense dynastic instability following the civil wars between the Árpád claimants, and his coinage reflects a consolidating monarchy still finding its administrative footing. He was canonized in 1192, making him one of the rare medieval rulers whose coins predate their issuer's sainthood by nearly a century.
